Summary: The concern with forest fragmentation in Espírito Santo caused its territory to be inserted in the Ecological Corridors Project, in the year 2003, aiming to conserve and connect remnants of Atlantic Forest. Among the 12 Corridors, Duas Bocas-Mestre Álvaro was chosen to be the object of study of this work, since it is located mainly in the Metropolitan Region of Greater Vitória, which is characterized by contemplating the greater part of the population of Espírito Santo and presenting a process of urban expansion on Areas of Environmental Interest. Therefore, the main objectives of the research are to analyze space-temporally the urbanization of the Metropolitan Region of Greater Vitória between 1970, 1990, 2007 and 2012, its expansion, from 1990, on the area that today constitutes the Ecological Corridor Duas Bocas-Mestre Álvaro (CEDBMA), the negative impacts resulting from this, as well as the real effectiveness of the legislation regarding the conservation of the Corridor. In order to achieve these objectives, different methodological steps were taken, such as data collection, GIS processing, visits to the field of study and interviews. The results of the research showed that, between 1990, 2007 and 2012, urbanization advanced on CEDBMA, mainly in the form of industrial condominiums / industrial blends, and in specific residential neighborhoods, that expansion occurred without proper basic sanitation infrastructure. Environmental degradation was also observed in the corridor, such as water pollution and the death of wild animals on the roads. Through the analyzes, it could be concluded that the Conservation Units, especially those closest to urban areas, and the Corridor as a whole, deserve greater attention from the competent institutions, especially when it comes to future infrastructure projects, because even having a very important role for the region, it have faced several challenges to maintain their forest cover, connectivity and environmental quality as a result of unsustainable urban expansion processes.
