Summary: The River System of the river Jacaraípe, a landscape that covers the
expressive area of the municipality of Serra, Espírito Santo, was and continues
to be a scenario of constant transformations. The process of appropriation of
nature by the actions and practices of society intensified from the 1950s
onwards, with the eradication of the agricultural coffee crop and replacement by
urban and industrial activities, currently marked by impacts and degrading
alterations necessitating an understanding depth of this reality.
In view of this context, this research aimed to develop and apply the concept of
River System as an integrating cut of the transformations of society and nature,
considering the Geosystem and Sociogeomorphology, in the process of
transformation of the landscape of the River Jacaraípe – Serra, Espírito Santo.
The study started with the bibliographical review discussing the importance of
Integrated Landscape Analysis in Geography supported by foreign and national
literature on the concepts of River System, Geosystem and
Sociogeomorphology. Subsequently, its application and discussion, rescuing
the historical understanding of the occupation process and dynamics until the
present using the classic procedures of geographic investigation with the use of
geotechnologies of GIS and Remote Sensing. Following, in a complementary
way, the use of Sociogeomorphology, listing unpublished and revealing cutouts
and arrangements in the landscape.
The use of the methods and techniques of this research allowed to develop a
satisfactory methodology for diagnosis and further analysis, possible to be
applied in other fluvial systems and that can be used by several sectors of
society. The results make it possible to identify and spatialize, in a more precise
way, the most critical areas of the analyzed system, pointing out several
environmental damages in the fluvial channels such as the river / channel
cover; construction of urban road over river and canal; loss of channels in
number and extent. The types of transformation created revealed conflicts of
use, evidenced in photos and cartography, as part of the Urban Expansion
Zones and the Special Zones of Social Interest, located in areas of
environmental protection and fragile as slopes and valley bottoms and within a
ecological corridor, among other damages, alerting to the necessity of a more
balanced and sustainable planning between the natural elements and the
anthropic actions.
