Summary: Population aging is a growing trend, started in developed countries and has also been occurring in developing countries, mainly due to improvements in the economic patterns of societies and in health and hygiene systems. This study aims to study the characteristics, causes, indicators, consequences and perspectives of the population aging of the Southwest Serrana Microregion of the State of Espírito Santo, and in particular the municipality of Domingos Martins, from the 1970s to 2010. The choice of the Southwest Serrana Micro - region , comprising the municipalities of Afonso Cláudio, Brejetuba, Conceição do Castelo, Domingos Martins, Laranja da Terra, Marechal Floriano, Venda Nova do Imigrante was based on the indicators and studies that highlighted the region for having high index of aging in relation to Holy Spirit. The municipality of Domingos Martins, which has been studied with greater focus, has peculiarities such as colonization of European origin, rugged relief and mild climate which contributes to local tourism, favoring the region's economy, and the need for studies in this area becomes relevant. area to assist in future planning. The methodological procedures used were initially a bibliographical review on demographic and population aging issues, and the analysis and interpretation of demographic data from the Southwest Serrana Microregion and the municipality of Domingos Martins. Next, a field work was carried out in the municipalities, interviewing those responsible for the care of the elderly in each place to gather information about existing programs and projects and public policies aimed at this part of the population. In Domingos Martins, a case study was carried out with seniors from Headquarters and the district of Ponto Alto, addressing socioeconomic and demographic issues. The results of the study showed that all the municipalities surveyed develop activities aimed at the elderly, some places are in more advanced stages in the programs and public policies. Interviews with seniors indicated positive aspects of public policies and demands for improvements. It is believed that much remains to be done for the benefit of older citizens in this region.
