Summary: This work provides a case study about two important avenues in the city of Serra-ES, Avenida Brasil and Avenida Eudes Scherrer Souza, which can be considered the emergence of new expressions of urban centralities.Thus,it investigates the commercial axes and services as a result of the decentralization of comercial activities and retail services from Vitória, Espírito Santo´s capital, in order to comprehend the role of those activities in the recent changes in Serra´s urban structure. The procedures taken in this study to understand those processes are based on a method used by Reis (2001 and 2007) in attempt to check the Central Activities Indicator (CAI) and also the categorization proposed by Duarte (1974) to classify commercial activities according to their consumption frequency and service activities according to their specializations. According to the data collected, at Avenida Brasil was found 264 central activities and obtained a 59% CAI. Avenida Eudes Scherrer Souza found 223 central activities that resulted in a 56% CAI. The CAIs checked in these structures show that both have great power to attract consumers. Avenida Brasilpresented a higher CAI and a larger amount of central activities, however, the Avenida Eudes Scherrer Souza demonstrated a more complex structure, due to a number of more specialized services activities and a commercial behavior with characteristics predominantly of the central areas of cities. Therefore, because of that, the real estate market is already acting in the planned production of commercial equipmentin these two axes, revealing the process of restructuring and urban sprawl which happens in Serra´s city. The types and characteristics of the central activities and commercial equipment expose that all the socioeconomic and urban transformations in Serra, point o a new role in the metropolitan region of Grande Vitória (RMGV). Currently, Serra began to gathers relevant functions, related to the greater specialization in trade and services.
