Summary: This objective research documents the process of analysis and urbanization of the Prainha area,
in the city of Vila Velha, state of Espirito Santo, detecting the elements that hold, which are
erased and those that transform. It is hoped that this approach will favor future studies, and
specifically, the planning of the place. The methodology involves a mission of grounding on
urban morphology and the main themes in books, articles and academic papers dealing with the
theme. Authors were also consulted about the history of Espírito Santo and Vila Velha. The
conviviality frequented the ancients, the informative with the agents who sought the memory
of the place and consulted the academic works with the same object of research, complemented
a list of historical facts and daily life. The research is based on the analysis of maps, plans,
photos, archive reports and field research using the methodology of the English school of urban
morphology. From the research of cartographic documentation, a selection of the most research
results was made, the study area was cut, its expansion, redesign and georeferencing, so that
they could be compared, overlapped and nailed. Comparing the current archives and those of
1853, they perceive the architectural elements that remain as the Convento da Penha, a church
of Nossa Senhora do Rosário, the fort São Francisco Xavier. In addition, the axis of the current
street Luciano da Neves can be identified incipiently in 1853 and the road leading to the
Convent Nossa Senhora da Penha, now popularly known as Ladeira da Penitência, appears
figuratively on the 1888 map. Some elements were erased such as the islands of Forca and
Timbebas. The context, the hypothesis of a city plan, as roads, are the most persistent elements
in the metamorphoses that occurred over time, has been proven. It is not possible to say that the
colonial layout was preserved due to lack of documentation; however, the installation of the
Luciano das Neves matrix, the square and the axis were structured and the conditions for the
transportation service evidenced in 1894, in the Vila Velha's first cadastral plan This, in turn,
dressed, at first sight not so evidently, but clearly pointed with the overlap of the maps.
